What Is the Recovery Timeline for a Full Tummy Tuck?

Considering a body contouring plastic surgery procedure like a tummy tuck is a big decision, but one that can ultimately result in an improved sense of self-confidence that has far-reaching positive impacts on the rest of your life. Knowing what to expect from the recovery timeline for a full tummy tuck is important to help you plan appropriately and ultimately ensures your recovery and healing are as smooth as possible. For more individualized guidance, reach out to Your Girlfriend the Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Danielle DeLuca-Pytell for a consultation.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline

For a full tummy tuck, you may return to unrestricted activity at six weeks. However, it is not six weeks of complete rest. The first two weeks are what Dr. DeLuca-Pytell refers to as “princess treatment.” This is a time for self care only. You can get up and move from room to room to take care of your basic needs, but during those first two weeks, you should plan to outsource childcare, house care, and running errands. You should also refrain from travel and exercise.

The next two weeks are a gentle return to light activity. Things like going for a slow walk or a gentle ride on a stationary bike are fine at this point. This is not the time to push yourself, rather, listen to your body. As you build endurance, you can start adding more to your routine including longer periods of activity and taking care of more things around the house.

Lifting and doing anything strenuous should be avoided for the full six weeks. This is to allow the abdominal muscles to have as much healing time as possible.

Other Considerations for Healing After a Tummy Tuck

Everyone’s body heals at a different rate. Factors such as skin elasticity, genetics, and overall health will all impact your recovery timeline after a tummy tuck. Additionally, you may decide to undergo additional treatments alongside your procedure. For example, when someone is having a tummy tuck, they may also desire something to be done to the back of their torso. Liposuction of the flank area is commonly performed with a tummy tuck. Not everybody needs this, but for some, it is beneficial. Other things that people may be interested in at the same time would be doing something to enhance the breasts as part of a mommy makeover. Undergoing additional procedures could impact your post-operative restrictions and instructions.
