Liposuction in Troy

Liposuction in Troy

This surgery is for women or men with localized areas of excess fatty tissue. This body contouring surgery is not intended for weight loss. It is also not indicated for areas with sagging skin which can get worse with liposuction. This operation removes stubborn fat deposits and can give better shape and contour to parts of the body. Liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, but the procedure can eliminate areas of fat that are unresponsive to typical weight-loss methods. Patients are healthy individuals who have certain areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, such as the woman who inherited her mother’s thighs, or the man who inherited his father’s love handles. They are ideal candidates for liposuction in Troy.

How Lipo is Performed

This procedure removes excess fatty tissue through small incisions using a cannula (think very skinny vacuum).  Fluid is first instilled into the area to be removed to help reduce bleeding, then the fat is removed with passes of the cannula to contour the fat removal to make the area more even in appearance with the surrounding fatty tissue. The endpoint is determined by both look and feel.

Upside

For stubborn fatty deposits, liposuction can provide improved contour and shape.  Patients report feeling better in bathing suits and clothing and increased self-confidence.

Downside

Liposuction recovery can feel like an incredibly tough workout. Initially, the result will be obscured by swelling, and this can take many months to improve. It usually takes up to a year for the skin turgor to return to its presurgical feel. Sensory changes in the area suctioned are common as is bruising. People always ask if liposuction makes you gain weight elsewhere. It does not, but because liposuction permanently removes fat cells (we don’t grow more), if weight gain occurs after liposuction, the areas of fat surrounding the area treated may increase in size disproportionately compared to the area treated.

Side Effects

The surgery can leave you feeling as sore as your worst boot camp workout. Small scars are left behind. Swelling may persist for a few months after the procedure. Sensation of the skin may be altered after the procedure. The appearance of the skin may not be completely smooth or even after the surgery. Some drainage may be noted, and sleeping on an old towel is suggested. Bruising can be significant.

Lipo Risks

All surgery carries risk. I recommend patients carefully weigh the benefits of having surgery against the potential risks which may arise. Risks include pain, bleeding, infection, damage to nearby structures, need for other procedures, recurrence of laxity, and dissatisfaction with results.
